What is halving?

Halving is a pre-programmed event in Bitcoin that cuts the reward miners receive for each new block by half. It happens roughly every four years, on a fixed schedule.

Why it matters

By reducing new supply over time, halving slows the rate at which fresh bitcoin enters circulation and moves the network towards its 21 million cap. Similar mechanisms exist on some other networks.
