What is a fork?

A fork happens when a blockchain’s software rules change. A soft fork is backward compatible, so older software still works, while a hard fork creates a permanent split in the rules.

What can result

A hard fork can produce two separate networks and assets if part of the community keeps the old rules. Bitcoin Cash, which split from Bitcoin, is a well known example.
