What is a hash?

A hash is the output of a hash function, which turns any input into a fixed-length string of characters. The same input always produces the same hash, but even a tiny change gives a completely different result.

How it is used

Blockchains use hashes to link blocks together and to prove that data has not been altered. This one-way, tamper-evident quality is central to how blockchains stay secure.
